About 15 minutes after my brother and his family drove off, after visiting us over the weekend, we had some OTHER visitors show up….and boy what a bunch of turkeys they were!
Yep – two real turkeys – in our yard! Maybe we’ve been city folk for too long, but we found this a little unbelievable. My son was not amused. “Can you die from a turkey bite?” he asked nervously. Well, I wasn’t planning on getting THAT close to them; I just wanted to see if I could snap their picture.
"Are these the same turkey that people eat for Thanksgiving?" he wanted to know. I knew this self-proclaimed vegetarian was imagining someone wrestling the turkey, feathers and all, into the oven for a holiday feast – but this Zen Mama Wannabe wasn’t in the mood to go into all the gory details of how it actually works out. (After all, whom do you think he got his self-proclaimed vegetarianism from??!)
The turkeys had a grand time pecking around our yard, but at least they didn’t seem to be nibbling on all the flowers and plants like the deer that came in a couple months before. (My hydrangeas have still not recovered! Obviously they are considered a deer delicacy).
You get what you think about, right? So what materialized later that same afternoon? 2 baby deer – thankfully wandering through the trees and bushes OUTSIDE our fenced yard (we’ve had several experiences with deer who have gotten INSIDE our yard – the last time turned into high drama with the police and animal control involved when the full-grown deer got stuck trying to jump through a 6 inch crack between two of our fences. As Maxwell Smart would say, “Missed it by THIS much.”
Well, I missed too - getting a picture that is, of cute little spotted Bambi and friend – those babies move much faster than I do, but I was able to spy their Mama walking by a neighbor's house, looking rather bored by the whole thing.
So what wild animals have you had come visiting?? Can anyone beat a deer and a turkey -- in the same day no less? Hmm – makes me wonder who our NEXT visitor will be?! Guess I’d better watch my thoughts!
